Riviera Maya Vacation

These pictures are from a family vacation the Riviera Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. They were taken from March 20th to the 24th, 2007. The pictures are from the Grand Sirenis Resort, the Mayan Ruins at Chichen Itza, and the Xel-Ha water park.

    The top of the Mayan pyramid at Chichen Itza.
    This picture of the Mayan pyramid was taken just before sunset on March 22nd, the day following the Equinox. The Equinox held special significance to the Mayans. The pyramid was designed such that on the equinox a series of light and dark shadows crawl down the staircase on the left as the sun sets emulating a snake. This also is seen to a slightly lesser degree on the day before and after the Equinox. If you look on the staircase on the left you can see the bright areas set off by shadows forming the body and extending to the head of the snake
